Metabolism is a very important word and concept in the human body structure and function. It is not just important for people who are into a diet program but it is very important for everyone to know how their body functions. In simple terms metabolism is the body process of producing energy needed for the sustenance of the body as well as for cell renewal. In a normal body metabolism our body converts what is being digested to simple sugars called glucose. This glucose is primarily the nutrient source in the blood and the is the resource for most of the bodily functions. Now that you have a background about metabolism it is easier to understand that Diabetes is a metabolic disorder. 

Remember that when we eat the food is digested and processed in the stomach by acids and also by enzymes found in the gastrointestinal system. There is a byproduct being produced in this process and that is the simple sugar glucose. Our cells then utilize the energy form that helps us in our daily functions as well as to help us replace any damage or dead cells. The problem lies in the malfunction happening when glucose cannot penetrate the cells. This is what happens if the body lacks the enzyme called insulin. Insulin is the enzyme or component that allows the cells in our body to absorb glucose.

Our pancreas has a very important role in the production of insulin. It is what produces insulin in our bodies. As we eat the pancreas releases hormones enough to break down the important components of food and distribute the simple sugar glucose in the blood stream to the cells, in effect this lowers the sugar content in the blood.

In a diabetic person there is a problem in the amount of glucose being absorbed in the blood because of there isn’t enough insulin that will disperse the sugar to the blood. This condition is referred to as hyperglycemia. The Sphygmomanometer works by blocking the flow of blood in the brachial artery travelling to the area of the arm. This is done by placing the sphygmomanometer’s cuff around the upper arm just below the underarm then inflating the cuff with the use of the air pump. The arm should be extended towards the body and should be leveled at the cardiac muscles. Pressure is continuously applied from the cuff until such time that the pressure should be released. This is done by releasing the air thru the valve found in the air pump. As the pressure dissipates the person who is reading the measurement shown in the gauge reads it by placing a stethoscope under the tuck under the cuff just above the pulse. The reader should be hearing two sounds. The first pulse that the person reading and using the stethoscope will hear corresponds to the measure in the upper quadrant pressure read or the systolic blood pressure. The second pulse will in turn correspond to the lower quadrant blood pressure reading or the diastolic reading. These readings are the blood pressure reading. 

Now that we know how to measure the blood pressure is what are the factors that affect your blood pressure? There are various factors that directly and indirectly affect your blood pressure. Factors like strenuous activities, food, caffeine etc. It is important to keep your body at a stable state before taking or measuring your blood pressure so that the results are somewhat accurate. High blood pressure is the measure above what is considered normal which is 140/90 but remember that normal varies from people to people since each has their own health conditions to consider.
